Bible passages: Luke 10:25-37

Most Bibles title this parable, “The Good Samaritan,” although the phrase does not actually appear in Jesus’ words. I’m not going to call it that today. Today I’ll call it the parable of the Crazy Neighbor. The title Crazy Neighbor describes the way Jesus tells us to serve others (as a neighbor) and tells us the mindset that we should bring with our help (absolutely crazy).

Stopping to help as a Neighbor is risky and it is crazy. He sees the risk and the danger and decides to help anyway. He doesn’t just listen to a painful story that needs to be heard. He doesn’t just offer his “thoughts and prayers.” He doesn’t help one day and drop out the next. Instead, he picks the plundered man up, takes personal expense in the risk and in the medical costs and comes back day after day to make sure things turn out alright.
